The Housing Authority of the County of Butte (HACB) helps individuals and families find safe, affordable housing throughout Butte County. Affordable housing programs can make a meaningful difference for families, seniors, and veterans looking for a safe and stable place to live.

 

Two important programs that help residents find housing are the Housing Choice Voucher Program and the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program.

 

What is the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)?

The Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly known as Section 8, is a federal housing program that helps low-income households afford safe and decent housing in the private market. Instead of living in government-owned housing, participants can choose a home or rental unit that meets program guidelines.

How it Helps Residents

Participants generally pay about 30% of their monthly income toward rent, while the housing authority helps cover the remaining portion. This partnership makes quality housing more affordable and accessible for families, seniors, and veterans. This allows families to live in a stable and supportive environment while focusing on their well-being and future goals. 

With more manageable housing costs, residents can:

• Access safer and better housing
• Reduce financial stress from high rent
• Live in stable communities
• Improve their long-term financial security

The program can assist households that rent a mobile home in a mobile home park. They also help residents who already own their mobile home by helping cover the monthly space rent in an approved mobile home park. This provides an affordable option for residents who own their homes but need assistance with lot rent costs.

At this time, the Housing Authority of the County of Butte does not offer a Homeownership Program that applies vouchers toward mortgage payments.

What is the VASH Program?

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program is specifically designed to help U.S. military veterans experiencing housing instability or homelessness.

This program is a partnership between:

• The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
• The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

How the program works and their benefits?

Veterans who qualify for the VASH (HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) Program can receive: 

• A housing voucher to help pay rent
• Support services from the VA
• Assistance with healthcare, counseling, and case management

Both programs provide many benefits to residents, including:
